Word Clouds Free and Easy
Wordle.net is a free resource for creating word clouds. You can copy and paste a collection of words from any document you choose and have it make your cloud that way. Another option is to pull the words from a blog or RSS feed. I did this to produce the word cloud below using the
Loti Guy Speaks blog.

Advanced Features
Here is a wordle image that was generated using the advanced wordle usage feature. This allows you to give different words a specific relative weight. I typed the info up in MS word and pasted it in.

Another interesting advanced feature allows you to pick the size and color (using hex code) for each word. A simple way to handle the color coding would be to get a list of 8 basic colors and their hex codes for student reference. There are many sites with info about hex color codes such as
Web Color Chart.
Implications for Learning
This is a really interesting tool but what are the implications for helping our students learn? How could the use of different colors and sizes of words impact our visual learners? For some this might seem confusing but to others it might help them understand. The biggest learning value might be in the process of creation as much as it is with the end product.
Feel free to add comments about how this could be integrated into a classroom.
- Take keywords or concepts from a novel and do a word cloud summary? Students could make the most important ideas larger than the rest.
- Couldn't the same thing be done for a historical event?
How about a wordle on the threats to our natural environment? Students could rank what they perceive to be the greatest threats via larger text. The smaller text could include smaller contributing factors and other aspects of the issue.

This is really cool...it is a neat tool to use in a variety of ways in the classroom.
As soon as I opened it I thought it would be nice for my students to see their spelling words
done in different fonts. Using words to summarize a story are also neat ideas. I will try to
see how it will be most effective in my classroom and I will re-post later. As soon as I opened it
I was intrigued :o)
Thanks

This is a great teaching tool. The word cloud could be used for any concept and any subject.
It really lends itself to historical events and in science students could create a word
cloud for each type of science i.e. physical, natural, etc. In addition, it becomes an almost
error free environment because there are so many words that students can choose from and little
chance for failure. This could also be used in early childhood to culminate a theme. Students
could think words that remind them of the topic and different concepts that were covered. Seems like a
colorful and appeasing activity. It can be placed on wall to serve as reminder of concept, topic, or subject.

I think its a great example of engaged learning. Students are able to manipulate a project with a given software. It lends itself to interest and diverse of activity. Students today are more geared towards technology. It's also a great teaching tool to use in writing. Being that vocabulary is a weak objective, students are able to manipulate and create a web cluster on vocabulary. AWESOME!

This is almost like a graphic "dis-organizer". Students could map out concepts or do their character/story analysis activities with a more traditional organizer (paper based or the Inspiration/Kidspiration software) and then do this activity to present or reinforce their learning. Students will give their wordle design a great deal of effort and will really think about what they are doing...

I tried the Wordle program. Iloved it,I even posted my wordle clouds on Mixtures and Solutions
and Conductors and Insulators of electricity. I am going to have my students try it tomorrow after
their quiz. I see my students benefiting because they well create a cloud based on what we have taught
and in order to do that, they would have recall concepts taught through out the last two six weeks.
I will allow them to read books and their interactive science journals to add their words.
The following is where you can find my wordle cloud

This is so awesome and I love it! I can see so many possibilities in using this for different lessons, for different reasons! My students work on collages at the beginning of each semester where they write their names and surround it with words that describe personal strengths and weaknesses. Because my courses are geared toward teaching my students the importance of getting to know themselves in order to find a suitable job/career, I have them focus on these strengths to improve them, and to fix the weaknesses. The most important thing is that they know and understand that good and bad come together and make a unique individual. I made my own wordle cloud about marketing. It looks pretty good, if I don't say so myself.

I thought it was a neat tool to use in the classroom. The tutorial was very user friendly allowing me to create a wordle cloud right away. I created a wordle cloud using the word Happy. When I am teaching character feelings to my students, they often use the same repetitive words to describe the character's feelings. Some of the common words used by my students are happy, sad, mad, etc. Therefore, I introduce synonym words that can be used for those particular words. I created a wordle cloud with synonym words for the word "happy". I wanted to put emphasis on the word "happy"; therefore, I put the word in all caps. I emailed the wordle and will post it on discussion forum.

I really like this tool! I think my students will really like it too. I plan on implementing in my classroom during my tutoring block. I'll let my students take turns on my classroom computers and create their own wordle. For my students who are struggling with certain science concepts, I will have them focus on that concept for their wordle. I think this will really help out my LEP students.

I have 39 LEP students this year and I really need to implement a lot of vocabulary in my classroom. This tool is really great!
I used it for one of my students, I had her create a wordle and she started to grasp the concept of word usage so much better.
Before this idea, I was using word collages for creative vocabulary, but this is an amazing idea that can be used as well.

I think this is a wonderful idea. This can be used with synonyms for emotion vocabulary. Students find it very difficult to understand a character and how they feel about something in a story when they come to a word (ie. anxiety) that they don't know the definition of. This tool would really help students remember the synonyms to these types of words.

I like this idea especially for my ELLs and RIMs. Most students are global learners and therefore learn information better visually. This is a great graphic organizer that can be used to help build vocabulary. The word cloud serves as a word bank of key terms in units. It can be used as a prereading strategy to build background knowledge or as an after reading strategy to synthesize and summarize information read.

Wow, this is awesome. I'm thinking of even using it for home projects!! But, for Pre-K, it would be nice if I could add a small picture/icon. I'm thinking of a Word bank for letters. such as M would have monkey, mom, microphone, mouse, etc.
